How long does a game last?
Games go for just under an hour - we try to start as soon after the advertised hour as possible. Hosts will ask between 36 - 42 questions in that time.

I answered really quickly and my answer was first! Why did the host score me in second or third place?
The answer will appear on your screen before it appears on the host's. This happens in particular when everyone knows an answer and answers very fast. This is known as 'lag', and it gets us all at times!

What sort of games are played?
We play several sorts of games. The idea is the same for each - answer as quickly as you can!

Game Types
  • General Trivia - questions have no particular theme
  • Theme - questions revolve around one or more themes (all start with the same letter; all are about colours; all questions are about movies/animals etc).
  • Team Trivia - players are divided into two groups that vie for the highest team score.
  • Random Trivia - these games are not hosted; where the last correct answerer asks the next question.

Question types
BANDA (BEFORE AND AFTER)
BANDA stands for 'Before and After'; and is comprised of two separate entities joined by a common word. An example of a clue would be: 'Friends actor who traveled in time to become an Erle Stanley Gardner character in 1933'. The answer is Matthew Perry Mason. PERRY would be the word in common.

RHYME TIME

RHYME TIME is a clue with a two-word rhyming answer. An example of a clue would be: 'Agile clanging percussion instrument'.The answer is 'nimble cymbal'.

TOM SWIFTIES

A TOM SWIFTY is a phrase in which a sentence is linked by a pun to the manner in which it is said. An example is;'I only have diamonds, clubs and spades,' said Tom ___________.'The answer is 'heartlessly'

ACROWGRAMS

What noun is spelled by the first letter of each of the answers to the following clues?
1. Female fox 2. Cry of pain 3. Lohan 4. Fox hunt cry.
VOLT (Vixen, Ouch, Lindsay, Tallyho!)

Scoring
For most games, when there are 10 or less players, the first four answers are awarded points on a gradated scale of 3, 2 and 1. When there are at least 10 players but less than 15, the first four answers are awarded points on a gradated scale of 4, 3, 2 and 1.When there are more then 15 players, the first five are awarded on a gradated scale of 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1.If there are more points than answers, everyone still gets points according to the scale.

I was trying out the colours and sounds - why did people ask me to stop?
During the game, only the host uses colour, to make it easier to see when a question is being asked. We do use colour in games of team or random triiva, however! Sometimes sounds can be distracting or annoying in the middle of a game, so the host may ask you politely to wait till the end of the game to try them out!

This is fun, I want to host! How soon can I run a game?
Good! We always welcome new hosts! We suggest you play for a couple of months before you run your own game, to get the hang of things. One of our longer-term members will mentor you to assist you in writing good questions and with timing your quiz. Let Hez know that you'd like to host and we'll work with you to organise it.

From: Maverick - 12/02/2017 - This is the video of a question that came up in Biscuit's game on Thursday. San Francisco TV news station KTVU was pranked by an NTSB intern who provided them with fake names of the pilot and crew of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6 2013. The station inexplicably did not manage to put two and two together and read the list of names on the air without noticing the problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLbOtX-fXBU
